Single handed Rowing the Tasman Sea

As you would know if you follow along here I like my kayak as well so I keep that part of the multi sport discipline on my horizon for any news.

I followed the tragic end of a courageous trip by Andrew McAuley to solo cross the Tasman. http://www.watzzupsport.com/index.php?s=kayaker+lost+at+sea

The latest attempt to make a solo crossing whilst not in a kayak is still a damn brave task to undertake.

Shaun Quincey will battle a distance of over 2200km in 10-20 metre swells and one of the most hazardous seas in the world. Taking an estimated 50 days, his expedition, named Tasman Trespasser 2, will be an epic adventure.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Shaun will depart Australia in November 2009, rowing the treacherous Tasman Sea without any assistance.

Shaun hopes that his expedition will be as successful as his father’s after a recent series of failed bids to make a solo crossing of the Tasman. Rowing entered Shaun’s life when he was 14 years old for Takapuna Grammar School, which provided the stepping stones to Surf Boat Rowing and eventually the Tasman Sea

In November 2008, I decided 2009 would be the year that I row the Tasman. I have planned this trip many a time in my head and now here I am launching an official campaign to be the first person to row from Australia to New Zealand solo and unassisted.

To give you a bit of history, my Dad Colin Quincey was the first person to row the Tasman in 1977. It took him 63 Days and 7 hours since then no one else has crossed the Tasman rowing solo.

I have always thought, “Why can’t I do it?”, and on November 1st this year I will discover whether I am made of the same stuff as I set out from Forster, Australia to row around 2800km and aim for Taranaki, New Zealand

I wish him the best of luck you can follow along at
