Raid World Championships - Live From Canada

September 17, 2006 · Filed Under MAIN PAGE · Comment

The 2006 Raid World Championships are now underway, with 26 teams setting out on a 1000km course through the forests and fjords of Quebec, and Susan McKenzie is on the course reporting daily for SleepMonsters.

Susan is one of the most experienced adventure race reporters in the world, and is also a ‘local’ Quebec resident, with a detailed knowledge of the competition area.

The race is already living up to its fearsome reputation, with difficult paddling, energy sapping climbs and constant navigational challenges. It’s tough and tactical, and last year’s winners Les Arcs Quechua are out in front, while 5 teams have already withdrawn.

You can keep up with all the reports and news throughout the race here.

Across the Alps
Our series of daily reports from Swedish running photojournalist Fredrick Olmqvist on the Gore-tex Trans Alpine race has just come to an end.

This remarkable race took a group of international runners across the Alps in 9 stages over 8 days, passing through 4 countries and including 14,000m of climbing over a 230km course.

Fredrick got his reports through despite falling and breaking his hand, finishing the race with several different running partners and getting their views on the race, and what it takes to complete such a challenging course. Read all the reports here.

The list of both general and specific training activities must be organized in a logical fashion into a valid training program

With any speed program, skills must go from general to specific, basic to complex.

Athletes must establish general conditioning before doing complex lactic acid workouts.

They must develop the ability to accelerate before doing speed endurance.

  • Ten Tips for Optimum Athletic Recovery

Ten Tips for Optimum Athletic Recovery

       1. Drink water, all you care for, before during and after engaging in

       strenuous activity

       2. Eat fruit upon completion of activity to bring blood sugar back

to normal levels and provide sugar for conversion to muscle glycogen.

       3. Consume celery and/or tomatoes to provide necessary

sodium at least several times per week or as often as you participate

       in strenuous activity.

       4. When possible, rest after meals to foster optimum digestion.

       5. Remember, exercise does not provide energy, it requires energy.

Sleep as much as you desire.

       6. During long duration activities, drink sports drinks of fruit blended

with water. This works very well. For "ultra" events, add celery to the mixture.

       7. Monitor your water losses by using a scale to measure your weight before

        and after workouts.

       8. Raw foods provide the maximum nutrients for the minimal calories

encouraging the most rapid recovery. Gradually raise the raw percentage

of your diet until you approach or reach 100%.

       9. Develop the habit of going to bed earlier to obtain a good night's sleep.

      10. Keep meals simple for optimum digestion, and varied to insure optimum nutrition.
