The Council for Responsible Sport,
a non-profit organization based in Portland, Oreg., is seeking applicants for a pilot program culminating in certification for sustainably-minded athletic events. Applicants should be new or existing triathlon events striving for socially and environmentally-friendly race production. The deadline for applicants is Friday, January 25, 2008.
The Council for Responsible Sport (CRS) provides an objective, independent certification for sustainable athletic events. By defining realistic standards and providing a framework for achieving them, CRS enables event directors to incorporate environmental responsibility into their events while informing consumers which events adhere to these standards.
With growing awareness of environmental responsibility in mainstream habits and mass media, sporting events provide the opportunity for a deliberate, high-profile realignment of views toward a planning model that takes into consideration sustainability and environmental impact. At the same time, responsible event production can build value for the event and its participants, sponsors, and host community.
CRS certification is attained by earning credits set forth in five categories: waste, climate, materials/equipment, community/outreach, and health promotion. Additional credits can be earned for innovative practices not defined in the standard. Credits qualify events for Certified, Silver, Gold, and Evergreen levels of sustainability.
Where as I applaud any effort to have a sustainable way of life what a lot of crap, no wonder we are in a place of over government and regulation
